Large scale housing construction is set to begin across Nigeria in 2026 as authorities move from groundwork and reforms completed last year to full delivery of affordable homes nationwide.
The announcement was made during a three day management and staff retreat held in Ikogosi Ekiti, Ekiti State. The retreat focused on consolidating recent reforms and strengthening plans to deliver affordable housing to Nigerians in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
After dedicating the previous year to land acquisition, internal restructuring and improved staff welfare, the agency confirmed that 2026 will focus on construction and delivery. Several projects initiated last year are already at advanced stages.
One of the major projects, located in Bwari in the Federal Capital Territory, consists of about 400 housing units and is approximately 86 percent complete. The project is expected to be inaugurated upon completion and has been delivered without direct government funding. Seventy percent of the units in Bwari have been allocated to the informal sector to ensure broader access to affordable housing.
Within the first quarter of the year, projects in Bwari FCT, Odukpani in Cross River State and other locations are scheduled for inauguration. Previously completed housing units in Ajoda in Ibadan have already been delivered, while groundbreaking ceremonies are planned in Ekiti and Abia States with construction expected to commence immediately after.
From February, construction activities are projected to intensify nationwide. Land has already been secured and prepared in all 36 states to enable smooth rollout of projects. In addition to new developments, previously abandoned projects have been completed and made available to Nigerians at affordable rates.
To support the nationwide expansion, a public private partnership model will be adopted to attract investment and accelerate delivery. The housing programme is not funded through the national budget but operates through internally generated revenue and partnerships.
In Ekiti State, construction of 200 housing units in Ado Ekiti is expected to begin soon to help bridge the housing gap. The project will start with 100 two bedroom bungalow units following the provision of 20 hectares of land along Ekiti State University Road.
With land acquisition completed nationwide and multiple projects nearing commissioning, 2026 is expected to mark a significant phase of construction and delivery aimed at expanding access to affordable housing across Nigeria.
